AN author from Kidderminster has looked to the garden and her childhood for inspiration for her debut novel.

The Romany Gnomanies, by P M Winks, tells the story of a small tribe of “gnomanies” living at the bottom of a garden belonging to “big people”.

Mrs Winks, of Franche, explained: “When the big people move on, they don’t take the gnomanies with them, leaving them stranded in the city dump, faced with a life of rats and dirt.

“Then, by chance, they are spotted. The four friends are whisked into a bag and start their journey into the welcoming arms of the Romany.”

Mrs Winks spent the first eight years of her life in the care of a Romany gypsy family.

Her grandfather was ‘king’ of the Romany tribe, roaming the towns and countryside of Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

After Mrs Winks retired from a nursing career and her husband died, she began writing the novel.

The Romany Gnomanies is currently available from local book stores or online at Amazon.
