Crackdown on illegal parking

WYRE Forest District Council is taking action against cars parked illegally on pavements and grass verges.

Builder, Jason Harvey, 35, was given a £70 fine after parking on the pavement in Wilden Lane, Stourport, as he visited his girlfriend's house.

Mr Harvey had been parking there regularly for the past three months and said it was difficult to find somewhere to park in the area.

He added: "I was very angry. I have never had a ticket before. It's not fair. Everyone parks on the pavement there because there is nowhere else to park."

He added: "It is first come first served and if you have a business like mine it is very difficult to keep carrying your tools there and back."

District council spokeswoman Nina Das Gupta said the traffic regulation order for Wilden Lane applied parking restrictions which included parking on grass verges and pavements.

She explained that neither the district council or their civil enforcement officers, drew up the traffic regulation orders.

She said the council was responsible for enforcing the parking regulations, which included fining drivers who parked on the pavement or grass verges where parking restrictions were in place.

She added that if residents felt there was a need to lift the restrictions they could apply to Worcestershire County Council.

As the highways authority, the county council could re-consider restrictions and whether, in some cases, they should be removed or changed.

She explained: "There is no new policy applying, as it has always been the responsibility since September 17, 2007, for the council to apply the regulations that were previously made under the relevant road traffic orders."

Why oh why?? Why do I see criminal activity every night around SoS, Kidd and Bewdley and the police don't seem to notice, they'd rather take revenue from an easier target. When was the last time that you heard that a criminal in your area has been locked up for a long time?? Criminals are active and amongst us! I see them, like lads breaking the shop window on Severnside South etc.
But, on the flipside, we hear everyday about a friend / relative / neighbour that's been fined and penalised for 34 in a 30, ticketed for parking 10 minutes over by M&S, or parking like this bloke without causing harm to anyone!?! What's going on with the Police and the council, PLEASE STOP TRYING TO TURN ORDINARY PEOPLE INTO CRIMINALS, AND PERHAPS THINK ABOUT TREATING CRIMINALS LIKE...CRIMINALS??

Check out Worcester Evening News 9/5/08:

Travellers have again set up camp on the Sandyway on the A38 between Fernhill Health and Martin Hussingtree, near Worcester.

It's spoiling the entrance to the village. It's not just that, it's pulling on resources.
"It's not fair on the ratepayer. It's becoming a nuisance."
She said Mike Lovatt, who maintains the area and mows the grass for the parish council, was unable to get onto the land.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said the authority had spoken to the travellers.
"We have visited the site and have been assured that they are moving on this weekend," he said.
A spokesman for West Mercia police said: "We have spoken to the travellers and we are aware that they are planning to move in the not too distant future.
"We're not taking any action but we are in touch with the local authorities who are monitoring the situation."

So - it's a good job that they didn't park on the grass verges or pavements around Wilden Lane!! Obviously they would have been treated the same as local residents and ratepayers. (Or would they!!)

It seems that there's a bit of an imbalance going on - and perhaps a precedent being set.

Or is it discrimination in action (make up your own minds which way though!)

It is a great pity that the council is busy chasing people who seem to be causing no obstruction yet is totally ignoring cars causing regular obstruction at the foot of Red Hill in Bewdley, where vehicles parked from the Care Home regular cause problems. After all, parking restrictions were supposed to be there to keep traffic flowing, not to raise revenue and keep council staff in employment.

Firstly, WFDC take away most of the car parks, then when they think we have forgotten that, they employ extra parking wardens, and tell us it is our problem, deal with it, again the drivers are once again the victims, asbo'd teens are taking over the town s but hey lets victimise the driver because it is the only people we can get away with doing this to.

Okay they'll argue that there aren't parking restrictions in place so it's fine. You be the judge of it though

Oo that's nice give me a bit of time and I'll post to Flickr that nice picture I took on Sunday of the Police Van parked up on the grass verge opposite my house despite the road being clear and wide enough to accommodate them.

The licence plate and number are clearly displayed if WFDC want to take action :-)
