THE famous silos at the former British Sugar site are to be blown up before Christmas as they have been broken into by trespassers.
Developer, Cill Dara Property Partnership, has decided to demolish the landmarks, as there is a “safety issue” with them.
Cill Dara development manager, Peter Burford, said: “There have been recent cases of illegal entry into the silos by trespassers.
“There is a safety issue, as these silos are very high and it is dangerous for people to be breaking in to them.”
Mr Burford said the decision to destroy the silos was “not a difficult one” for Cill Dara, as it was felt the silos “did not contribute anything to the area”.
Up to 2,000 jobs are expected to be created by the transformation of the 60 hectares of land into a “strategic development site” with a mix of business and education opportunities.
Any businesses interested in opening premises on the site are being consulted and ideas are being discussed for the development.
The developer is also holding ongoing talks with Wyre Forest District Council and Worcestershire County Council on the future of the site.
So far, “The Beet” has been suggested as a name for the business park but Mr Burford said more detailed discussions with the district council would take place before any permanent decisions were made.
