LIBERAL Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson, Neville Farmer, has called for an open-topped bus parade for Wyre Forest’s Olympians and Paralympian.

“This has been the best Olympics for Britain in almost a century,” he said. “The fact that four Wyre Forest athletes have helped push us towards that triumph is something worth celebrating.

“It surely isn’t beyond the council’s budget to rent and decorate a bus to tour the area, finishing with a gathering in the Harriers’ stadium and a Mayor’s dinner to thank them.”

Mr Farmer, who admitted he was never much of a sportsman himself, said Wyre Forest had more sports facilities than most areas.

“As a kid, Wyre Forest’s range of sports clubs let me try my hand at canoeing, climbing, rowing, orienteering, cycling, swimming and even archery, as well as the usual school field sports,” he added.

“I never won anything but had great fun. Hopefully, these phenomenal athletes will inspire local children to get involved with the many sporting options Wyre Forest offers. There is no better way to get young kids off the streets and to focus their energies.

“Todd Cooper, Lucy Wainwright, Naomi Folkard and Claire Cashmore are fantastic, whether or not they win any medals.

“I don’t believe anyone in the area would disagree with the council splashing on a show of gratitude to them and their trainers for honouring Wyre Forest in such an incredible way.”
