HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY - Thanks to all the owners who worked with a willing band of volunteers to open their gardens to the public for the National Gardens Scheme. The season started with ‘tulip time’ at Little Larford followed by visits to Astley Towne House featuring a new grotto. There was also opportunity to visit a range of seven different Astley country gardens. More than £12,000 was raised during the summer.

There were more than 300 entries in the classes at the annual show held in Astley and Dunley Village Hall on August 2. Many people went along to view the flowers, fruit, vegetables, floral art and cookery exhibits.

Chairman Derek Walker presented Michael Ecob with a porcelain figure of barn owls in flight on behalf of society members to thank him for his service as chairman over the last 20 years. Derek said that profits from the summer social in July amounted to £750, which were shared between Acorns and Kemp Hospices.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 17 at 7.30pm with new speakers Mr and Mrs Millington on ‘plant hunting on holiday’. Anyone interested can phone Derek Walker on 01299 823270.
