DESPITE the ever-present threat of rain which is fast becoming the norm for British summer time the resort of Sunnydale lived up its name.

The Park Resorts holiday caravan site where we stayed is tucked away in the picturesque village of Saltfleet, Lincolnshire, about a mile in from the North Sea coast.

You cannot argue with value for money as we could get five people, including my one-and-a-half-year-old niece in the Gold standard ’van for under the price of a package holiday for two to most popular destinations in Europe.

Having had a fairly painless drive up from the West Midlands – straight up the M42, M1 and then across through Lincoln – we dumped our bags and set about exploring.

The caravan holiday has changed since I shared a tiny paint-peeling caravan on the Isle of Wight with my family as a youngster because this one had all mod cons including shower, fitted kitchen with an oven, grill and microwave and a gas fire and television.

We had three bedrooms between us – two couples and a youngster – and although we didn’t need it there is cot hire on site if you don’t want to pack your own.

If you’re a fishing fan and have your own licence you can use the site’s own outdoor pool and there is a shop stocked with a few essentials and two nearby grocery stores a short walk away in the village.

For youngsters aged five to 11-years-old there is the Sparky’s Krew club activities each morning with snacks available and amusements at the on-site bar The Curlew Club.

My only word of advice is be prepared to drive if you want to visit any interesting sites because even the coast is a good mile’s walk across protected estuary.

We plumped for Rand Farm Park (01673 858904, office@randfarmpark.com) which was not only a hit with our niece because of all the different animals but because of the large outdoor play park.

You must also take a look around Lincoln which is easily the most interesting city in the area with its cathedral and castle.

l The telephone number for bookings is 0871 200 2010 or visit www.park-resorts.com. You can book online or via your local travel agent.

Park Resorts is the leading operator of medium size caravan parks in the UK, operating 37 holiday parks in key coastal locations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Prices include entertainment for the whole family, including Sparky’s Krew and use of the leisure facilities including indoor pool, crazy golf and adventure playground.
